Technological performances upgrading and rehabilitation of building heritage inside the historic centre of Palermo

2021

The recovery of building heritage through the containment of carbon emissions is one of the strategies pursued by the city of Palermo. This design approach becomes more paradigmatic when it’s referred to sensitive and historic buildings or urban areas, having an international interest or involved in participatory projects for the Mediterranean city, well beyond the attention that citizens attest to them. We would analyse the Volta electrical Power Station, inside the harbour area and near the Castello a mare, interested by the overall rehabilitation of Palermo waterfront. This building qualifies itself, through a retrofit hypothesis proposed by the authors of this essay, as a significant ex…

Sistemi costruttivi tradizionali in gesso nell’architettura siciliana

2020

Chalks outcrops characterize all the central-western territory in Sicily. They are different in types and extension and tangibly mark the presence of the well-known sulphurus chalky series. In the same areas it is possible to see several traditional buildings built, even in their structures, using gypsum, an material which is unusual in other contexts. In some cases the chalk outcrop makes up even the base of a building. This text describes different kinds of walls, floors, vaults and flooring where gypsum is the main material.

The Recurrent Characteristics of Historic Buildings as a Support to Improve their Energy Performances: The Case Study of Palermo

2017

Abstract The analysis of the recurrent characteristics of the local historic architecture is useful to develop large-scale energy analyses, regulations and financial strategies, but also to support technical guidelines for an energy improvement balanced with conservation. For this purpose, a multi-scale methodology ranging from envelope components to the urban dimension is necessary. In the research here exposed, this approach is investigated by focusing on the historic architecture of Palermo. For this heritage, the collection of thermal and hygrometric data for envelope components is combined with the examination of representative constructions, based on building stock categorization. Int…

Early modern period adobe in Sicily: recent finds

2014

Earthen architecture in ancient Sicily can be linked to a technological continuity common to the whole Mediterranean basin. The island possesses numerous finds, dating back to periods from pre-history to the Hellenistic-Roman age, during which the adobe technique was common. Therefore the archaeological field had been the only one investigated, also due to the fact that more recent evidence of use of earth as a principal element in wall-building techniques was unknown in the Region. Recently traces of adobe were discovered in in the historical centre of Cefalù, on the northern coast of Sicily; these few portions are to be found in residential buildings made primarily of stone. Albeit modest…
